چکیده
Automatic dialog systems tested with naive users are often confronted with special speaking styles, as e.g. words produced with emphatic or contrastive accent. Such utterances usually cause problems for word recognizers, because they were not included in the training data. It is thus important for the improvement of future systems to be able to collect utterances containing contrastive accents produced as natural as possible. We describe in this paper an automatic simulation system for provoking and collecting contrastive accents. With this system, 15 recording sessions were conducted; in total 205 word tokens produced either with default or with contrastive accent were collected. We discuss the results of an automatic classiication as well as the relevance of extracted prosodic features for the marking of contrastive accents.

متن کاملIntegrating the discreteness and continuity of intonational categories
It has already been observed that there is no one-to-one mapping between intonational categories and the pragmatic functions they are used to express. For instance, in German a particular pitch accent (L+H*) is often used to express contrastive (corrective) focus, but neither is the use of this pitch accent confined to this function nor is this the only pitch accent used to express it. In parti...
متن کاملContrastive Accent in Dialogue: Towards a Presuppositional Analysis
1 PROLOGUE What is the meaning of contrastive accents in dialogue? To answer this question, a number of hurdles have to be taken. To begin with, there is still no consensus in the prosodic literature whether a separately identifiable contrastive intonation exists in the first place. So, before we can even begin to answer the initial question, we have to try and answer a different question: do d...
متن کاملOn the alleged existence of contrastive accents
Speakers may use pitch accents as pointers to new information, or as signals of a contrast relation between the accented item and a limited set of alternatives. There is no consensus in the literature whether a separately identi able contrastive accent exists. Some studies report that contrastive accents are more emphatic than newness accents and have a di erent melodic shape. In other studies,...

The variables responsible for worker alienation in the under- developed countries are divided into two categories: cultural and organizational factors. Identification of these two types of factors in those countries should help us understand employee alienation better than that of the existing western models. In developing countries, there exist three types of behavioural dispositions (or eth...
